Creating an environmentally sustainable community has always been a top priority in the City, which is why our City Council adopted a Climate Action Plan in 2017 that set targets to reduce citywide emissions by 50% by 2035.
Here are a few ways that the City has supported the environment in the past year!
- We installed a solar battery electric vehicle BEAM charger in the parking lot of La Colonia Community Park! This is a free sustainable charging resource for community members with electric vehicles to utilize.
- We added a plastic bench to El Viento Pocket Park, which was made out of recycled plastic bags dropped off at the thin film recycling bin at City Hall.
- We planted a beautiful native pollinator garden in front of City Hall in collaboration with the SeaWeeders garden club.
- We added a community compost hub to the public works yard for community members to pick up free compost for their garden at home, created by organic waste disposed of at home as well.
- We installed a beach litter pickup station at Fletcher Cove and Seascape Sur to encourage beach-goers to collect trash during their time at the beach. The City takes part in several annual coastal cleanup days, as well.
- We added the Beach Borrow Toy Box to Fletcher Cove as well, shortly after. This project prevents beach toys from being left outside and washed into the ocean, while providing visitors with beach toys to borrow instead of purchasing new ones.
- City staff hosted the City’s first clothing swap at La Colonia, where community members diverted over 300 lbs of clothing away from the landfill.
- The City launched a Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate program on January 5th to support home electrification. Applicants can receive up to $1,500 when installing a heat pump water heater at their residence within City limits.
- We continue to host bike education classes with the San Diego Bike Coalition. The next City Cycling Class will be June 6th, and the next All About E-Bikes class will be at Revolution Bike Shop on June 16th! We hope to see you there!
