Meet the City's Newest Team Members

The City of Solana Beach is excited to welcome two new members to the Solana Beach Fire Department as the City continues its transition into a joint fire service model with the City of Del Mar. This new partnership marks an important step forward in strengthening regional collaboration, enhancing emergency services, and building a strong future for both communities. As part of this transition, several staffing and operational changes have been taking place to support the new structure and ensure continued high-quality service. The addition of these experienced professionals will play an important role in helping lead and support this next chapter for the department and the communities it serves.

Fire Chief Bret Davidson

Bret Davidson is serving as the Fire Chief for both the City of Solana Beach and the City of Del Mar. Bret comes from the City of Vista with 39 years of fire experience. Born and raised in San Diego County, he began his fire service career in 1986 in Pine Valley. Over the course of his career, he has served with fire departments in El Centro, Poway, and Rancho Santa Fe, and previously participated in cooperative regional efforts with the coastal communities.

Bret holds an Associate of Science degree in Fire Science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety Administration, and a Master of Arts in Human Resource management. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Design. In addition, Bret has earned a Public Leadership Credential from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Certificate of Leader Development from the U.S. Army War College.

Outside of work, Bret enjoys traveling, spending time in the mountains, fishing, and hunting. He is marries to his wife, Mary, and together they have two step-sons, Connor and Jack. He is also the proud father of Cheslie, Lauren, and Cole Davison, and grandfather to then grandchildren with an eleventh on the way.

Fire Prevention Specialist Shantal "Shanty" Arango

Shanty grew up in North County San Diego and built her fire prevention career through roles with the Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, and Orange City Fire Departments. Shanty attended Palomar and Miramar College, and is fluent in both Spanish and American Sign Language!

Outside of work, Shanty enjoys being outdoors - especially hiking, paddle boarding, and camping. Shanty loves spending time with her family, especially her niece and nephew, who always keep life fun and busy. Shanty enjoys cooking and baking, and is always up for trying new coffee spots.
