Daylight Saving Time: "Fall Back" Into Safety
As daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, the Solana Beach Fire Department encourages residents to check their smoke alarms when changing their clocks. This simple step can help keep you and your loved ones safe.
Working smoke alarms provide early warning and save lives. Take a few minutes this season to ensure your home and family are protected.
Smoke Alarm Safety Checklist:
- Test your smoke alarms: Press the test button on every alarm to ensure it is working properly.
- Check the batteries: Replace batteries as needed. If your smoke alarms use sealed 10-year batteries, you do not need to change them annually.
- Replace alarms every 10 years: Check the manufacture date on the back of each alarm. If it is 10 years old or older, it’s time to replace it.
- Check alarm placement: Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area (such as hallways leading to bedrooms), and on every level of your home, including basements.
