Time: 6:00 pm

There's peculiar magic in sitting in a darkened theater, surrounded by strangers, and sharing in a story that flickers to life on a screen. Solana Beach Community Connections invites you to a stimulating talk on "My Life as a Film Critic" on Tuesday, June 9th at 6:00 PM by Beth Accomando, Film Critic with KPBS News. The talk will take place at La Colonia Community Center, located at 715 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach 92075.

What Beth Accomando says about her life and career: "As a film critic, I love covering the medium I have had passion for since I was a kid and my dad introduced me to the movies he loved. I cover everything from zombies to Shakespeare and always try to place films in a larger context, be it social, political, historical, or just pop culture."

Beth will take you behind the scenes of the process of being a film critic, explore what it means to watch films not just for entertainment, but as a way of understanding the world.

Ms. Accomando has been a film critic for nearly 4 decades and covers arts and culture around San Diego for KPBS News. She studied film at UCSD. Since 1997, she's been covering independent and international cinema as well as pop culture for National Public Radio and Public Radio International's The World and is a contributor to Showbiz, Junkies, and Vanguard Culture. She's received numerous Society of Professional Journalist Awards and San Diego Press Club Awards for her radio and website works at KPBS. In addition, she's also received eleven southwestern area Emmy Awards including most recently for Journalistic Enterprise for her Stripper Energy Video Podcast. Beth is a member of Critics Choice Association, Online Film Critics Society, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and is Past Presidents and former Education Chairperson for the San Diego Film Critics Society.

This presentation is part of an educational series co-sponsored by Solana Beach Community Connections and the Solana Beach Parks and Recreation Department. The talk is free and open to the public.
